Intelligent pen cap top nominee for INDEX: Award

Bang & Olufsen Medicom, an innovative provider of drug delivery device solutions, is proud to announce that its intelligent pen cap, called C-Cap, has been selected as a top nominee for one of the world’s most prestigious design awards, the INDEX: Award 2007. The INDEX: design award presents new designs made to improve life and C-Cap has been nominated as a top design in the category ‘Body’.
C-Cap Improves Patients’ Life

The electronic cap for injection systems is based on B&O Medicom’s commitment to empower patients to take their medication as prescribed. Via its visual and acoustic reminder signals, C-Cap helps patients remember to take their medication. With C-Cap, B&O Medicom has created another discrete user-friendly device, focusing on users’ needs and requirements as well as providing pharmaceutical clients with a competitive edge.

The elegant shape of the cap device and the integrated clip helps the visual indicator remain visible to the user and its discrete appearance greatly reduces the social stigma of having to inject oneself. The distinct shape of the visual indicator and its placement on the edge of the pen cap are consistent with the design line of other medical devices made by B&O Medicom.

Improving Patient Compliance

Insulin dependent diabetics often forget to take their long acting insulin injection or can be unsure whether they have already taken it. C-Cap reminds the user when it is time to take insulin and also helps remind them whether they have taken insulin recently. C-Cap is suitable for all injectable treatments, taken on a regular basis, as it is customisable to fit a wide range of injection pens or autoinjectors. The device also has a visual feed back feature that allows patients and health care professionals to assess how well the user is adherent to treatment as prescribed by the physician. The feed-back is shown on the device as an easy to understand traffic-light signal every time to cap is removed from and reinserted on the injection pen. As a result of the discrete design, its reminder and feedback features, C-Cap empowers patients to be more compliant and motivated to stay in treatment.

The C-Cap Design

The design of C-Cap has been developed in a close collaboration between B&O Medicom and MADEBYMAKERS, a young Danish industrial design company based in Aarhus, Denmark. Medicom is building on its heritage from Bang & Olufsen’s design philosophy and is creating discrete user-friendly devices, focusing on the users’ needs and requirements. C-Cap is discrete in design and made to help patients integrate their treatment as part of everyday living. The design of C-Cap has succeeded in integrating the intelligent, supporting features in a discrete but efficient way, enabling the user to choose the level of exposure of the disease.

Speaking upon the nomination, Concept Development Manager, Paul Erik Fabricius, said: ‘We are proud that yet another of our drug delivery devices has been recognised for its innovativeness, design and functionality. The tablet reminder device, the Helping Hand, was nominated for the INDEX: Award 2005 and the nomination of C-Cap emphasizes that our drug delivery solutions aimed at improving patient compliance are appreciated.’

The intelligent pen cap from Bang & Olufsen Medicom will be exhibited together with the other top nominees at a large outdoor INDEX Award Exhibition at Kgs. Nytorv in Copenhagen on August 17th-24th before an international jury selects the winning designs.
