Novel Stethoscope wins Danish Innovation and Design Award (D.I.D)
Electronic stethoscope is brainchild of Bang & Olufsen Medicom and 3M Healthcare

A stylish electronic stethoscope was announced the winner of the Danish Innovations and Design award (D.I.D) yesterday in Horsens, Denmark. The stethoscope was selected the outright winner from over 33 other Danish designs, including several designer chairs and a mobile phone head-set. The 3MTM LittmannR electronic stethoscope model 3000, is the brain child of 3M Healthcare in partnership with Bang & Olufsen Medicom and is marketed globally under the 3M Littmann brand.
The model E3000 represents a new generation of stethoscopes and is based on proprietary sensor technology developed by Medicom which can filter out noisy backgrounds. The patented technology known as Ambient Noise Reduction (ANR), has been proven to reduce ambient or background noise from busy environments by approximately 75 percent. This noise reduction function allows physicians to focus more clearly on difficult-to-hear heart and lung body sounds and in turn helps them make a more precise diagnosis. In addition, the amplification of the heart and lung sounds is up to 18 times greater than the best acoustic stethoscope.
Receiving the award on behalf of Medicom and 3M Healthcare at Horsens yesterday was Bjørn Knud Andersen, one of the designers behind the stethoscope and a Medicom specialist in Biomedical acoustics. “Both Medicom and 3M are clearly delighted to receive this highly valued Danish Design award. In particular, we are pleased to be recognised for developing a novel concept that has a clear purpose – helping physicians make more precise diagnoses.”
The E3000 electronic stethoscope was launched in Dallas Texas last month at the American Heart Association, many cardiologists there were very impressed with the stethoscope’s ability to filter out surrounding noise and allow them to focus more on the critical body sounds.
